My 7.10 --> 8.04 (hardy) Upgrade Notes
Jul 10th, 2008, 10:49pm

I upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04, and there is a terrific improvement in the Wibrain devices.  Particularly with respect to suspend and WiFi.

Due to the proprietary Wifi and Video drivers, the update must be done a certain way.  Here's a a few quick notes from my expirience.  This method does not require touching a command line !

Download the 3 Ubuntu 8.04 driver modules (WiFi, Video, and Touchscreen) from the Google Code site
http://code.google.com/p/wibrain-b1l/downloads/list

Download the mfmgr WiBrain specific Application, too.

Do not install them yet.

Download the following packages from:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/

Note that some are in Base Utilities,  some are in Misc, and some are in Development.  You must get exactly these versions, not newer or older.

linux-image-2.6.24-16-generic (2.6.24-16.30)
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.24 on x86/x86_64

linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-16-generic (2.6.24.12-16.34) [restricted]
    Non-free Linux 2.6.24 modules on x86/x86_64

linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-16-generic (2.6.24-16.23)
Ubuntu supplied Linux modules for version 2.6.24 on x86/x86_64

linux-headers-2.6.24-16 (2.6.24-16.30)
Header files related to Linux kernel version 2.6.24

Do not install them yet.

Go into the Update Manager, and start the update.
The update takes about 1 hour for the downloads over a good high speed connection, and 1 hour for the install.  During the install, it will occasionally ask you a few questions about keeping configuration files.

When the install completes, reboot.  You will have a WiBrain with non-working WiFi, touchscreen, and with an incorrectly configured display.  That's OK, well fix them all in a few minutes.

Install the 4 Linux-image, header, and module packages you downloaded above by clicking on the packages.  You must do this in the right order.  Install linux-image-2.6.24-16 first.

Reboot.  As soon as the Wibrain BIOS image goes away, hit <Fn><ESC>.  You should see 3 kernel choices, each with a fail-safe counter part, for 6 choices total.  Select the 2.6.24-16 choice that is not the fail-safe. (Should be the 3rd option down)

You will still have a largely non-funcional Wibrain.  As long as it boots, don't worry.

Launch the Synaptic Package Manager.

Un-install the linux-image package with the too-high version number.  Do Not uninstall the one you just installed.  If you did this today, you should be un-installing  linux-image-2.6.24-18-generic.

When you select this, and Apply, it will take with it the module packages.  This is OK.

Un-install the old (7.10) linux-package.  When you Apply, you will see that it also removes the modules, and the old  (Gutsy) WiFi, Video. and Touchscreen drivers.  This is exactly what we want.

Install the 3 Wibrain - specific driver packages that you previously downloaded.

Reboot again.  This time you should find everything working, and have a proper aspect ratio (accelerated) display.

Install the Wibrain mfmgr applet.

For performance reasons, we can remove pulse audio.

In the Synaptic Package Manager, Mark gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio, and pulseaudio for removal.  This will also remove something called ubuntudesktop.  Don't worry too much about this, it does not really remove the whole desktop.  Apply.

Go to Power Management.  Tap on the General tab.  Make sure that under "When the Power Button is press", "Ask me"  is selected.

Enjoy !!
