How to watch the BP Live Feeds on Ubuntu Linux
Jul 14th, 2010, 9:21am

If you are having difficulty watching the live video feeds from the BP website on your Ubuntu Linux system, here's easy steps to get it working.

Short summary:  Try using MPlayer and the MPlayer mozilla plug-in instead of the totem plug-in.

Steps:

1.  Quit Firefox
2.  Launch Synaptic:  System -->  Administration --> Synaptic Package Manager
3. Enter admin password when prompted.
4. Search for "mplayer mozilla"
5. Install the mozilla-mplayer or mplayer-mozilla package.  If you do not already have mplayer installed, it will alert you that it will be installing mplayer, and over a dozen files that go with it (OSD fonts, mplayer GUI, skins, etc.)
6.  Hit "Apply".
7.  Search for "totem".
8. Find the totem-mozilla (or mozilla-totem) plug-in package.  Remove it.  It should NOT remove other packages.
9. Hit "Apply".

Launch your browser again, and it should work.  This has been tested on several versions of Ubuntu from 8.04 to 9.04. should work on 10.04 as well.
