How I got Grok working on Escaped Rabbit R1

Post by admin »

So the Rabbit R1 was originally envisioned as an AI device -- With Android 13 installed via Rabbit R1 Escape, I still wanted my R1 to be a compact AI client. Even without installing anything you of course get Google Search (Gemini) installed whether you want it or not. But I wanted to use my Rabbit R1 as a test bed for the official xAI Android App.

Here's How I got it (Mostly) working on the Small Rabbit R1 Screen:

-- Install the Grok app from Google Play
-- Sign into an existing Grok Account. Not that this is somewhat difficult due to the small screen. The keyboard tends to cover the areas where you need to type your password. With a little scrolling and blind typing, It can be accomplished.
-- The next problem I had was getting voice mode to work. To enable voice mode, it asks for a totally unverified age verification. While you can easily scroll to your age, there is an off-screen (Continue) button that is not accessible. To get around this, I connected a USB keyboard via a USB-C/USB-A hub. Not that a USB-A OTG adapter will work also. Select your age by scrolling, and then use the keyboard tap to move the highlight to the last listed year, but unless you want them to think you are >125 years old, don't select 1900. Hit tab exactly one more time, and then press enter. At this point, I have no idea if xAI thinks I'm a centenarian, but it worked.
-- Some icons are not visible, but the app is generally usable.
